Clean Eating: The Detox Diet That Works

For as long as people have eaten food, there have been diets and quack cures. But previously, these existed, like conspiracy theories, on the fringes of food culture. “Clean eating” was different, because it established itself as a challenge to mainstream ways of eating, and its wild popularity over the past five years has enabled it to move far beyond the fringes. Powered by social media, it has been more absolutist in its claims and more popular in its reach than any previous school of modern nutrition advice.

At its simplest, clean eating is about ingesting nothing but “whole” or “unprocessed” foods (whatever is meant by these deeply ambiguous terms). Some versions of clean eating have been vegan, while others espouse various meats (preferably wild) and something mysteriously called “bone broth” (stock, to you and me). At first, clean eating sounded modest and even homespun: rather than counting calories, you would eat as many nutritious home-cooked substances as possible.

Throughout 2020 and into 2019, the term “clean eating” has been thrown around left, right, and centre. However, many are unaware of the true meaning of clean eating and how it works as an effective detox diet. Below, we look at the definition of clean eating and how you can embrace it.

WHAT IS CLEAN EATING?

In simple terms, clean eating is a commitment to eating less processed foods and, generally, more whole (or “real”) foods instead. This includes cutting out added sugar, salt, and fat, as well as preservatives. When you choose a clean eating detox diet, you’re choosing foods that are natural and fresh rather than those processed in a lab – consequently, you’ll be benefitting from foods packed with nutrients rather than eating for the sake of eating. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll feel a difference in body and mind.

HOW TO EMBRACE CLEAN EATING

If you’re serious about clean eating, you will want to adapt to a predominately plant-based diet while cutting out processed fat and increasing the level of protein you’re consuming. Chicken is the best way to increase the amount of lean protein you’re consuming; however, it is recommended that you try to reduce the amount of meat you’re eating overall. Consequently, strive to get more of your protein from natural protein sources such as oats, natural yoghurt, almonds, and even broccoli. “Toxic” foods you will want to avoid include red meat, fried foods, and even milk – natural alternatives such as almond milk are free of hormones and excessive fat, helping to aid weight loss.

PREPARING FOR CLEAN EATING

Even though your clean eating venture may begin as a detox diet aimed at weight loss, long-term, it is a lifestyle you will want to adopt full-time. However, before you dive into clean eating, for a better chance of success, consider giving your body a good cleanse to flush out any toxins and start your detox diet with a clean slate. A fantastic way to cleanse your body is with a juice cleanse, however, you could also consider a soup and juice fast which is less daunting.
